Just a quick hints and tips update for today. On a number of my sites I have been using mod_rewrite to produce SEO friendly URLs. e.g. :
mysite.com/widgets/my-big-widget
instead of something like:
mysite.com/index.php?cat=4&function=show&prod=456
This is done using RewriteCond and RewriteRule statements in .htaccess. However, normally RewriteCond only applies to the RewriteRule immediately following it. This means we end up with horrible repetitive blocks of code in our .htaccess files. In this article I’ll show you how to rationalise this problem and shorten your code!

The problem – a few huge names offering hosting for pence, and offering predictably poor support.
The solution – don’t be greedy, just offer high performance hosting for a few quid more, and offer real HUMAN support.
This is the philosophy behind ziphost.co.uk. Ziphost is going to be small, but perfectly formed, offering robust high performance web hosting to small businesses and organisations. We aren’t planning to sell domain names – and strongly recommend anyone not to put their domain registrations and hosting in the same basket for safety’s sake.

So, it was a rainy Sunday, and going flying was not an option, so I thought I would spruce up my home page a little, particularly after launching my www.zipweb.co.uk project, which frankly makes my existing website look a little old. Anyway, I wanted to put a picture of my iMac on there, but was faced with either
- looking for some stock art (pricey) and I really don’t like supporting iStockPhoto
- lugging my iMac into the studio and photographing it
- flexing my Illustrator muscles
So, I thought I’d share the love today, and create a lovely vector illustration of my iMac in Adobe Illustrator.

I’ve been trying to find time for ages to produce a simple content managed website solution for small businesses that really works. I have just finished the first version, and it’s called ZipWeb! It’s streamlined, with search engine optimised site structures, and is sold as a one off fee, with our normal annual hosting cost. Much cheaper than some of the packages around.
In short, a ZipWeb site will allow you to add as many pages as you like, including your own images, and files for download. Pages can be displayed based on dates, so they automatically appear or disappear, or they can be set to never expire (permanent). All URLs generated are simple, human readable format, making the site even more attractive to Google and other search engines.
There is a demonstration site at www.zipweb.co.uk

WHM tips are coming thick and fast this week! This time I came across the problem of quickly creating a copy of an existing WHM Package or Feature List. These are normally managed in the area:
Main >> Packages
Which is fine if you are starting from scratch, but what if you want to create a new Package, or Feature List based on a pre-existing one? Going through all those check boxes is a royal pain! Well, it turns out it’s pretty simples! Read On…

OK, time for another delve into the underbelly of WHM, and a short lesson in how to achieve something which seems so poorly covered (although Cpanel, to their credit have started to explain things a little more clearly) elsewhere, especially for folks who may not be uber-geeks (I make no such claim!).
Very often we want to tighten php.ini up to make our servers as secure as possible – but then there is always going to be a few accounts where for various reasons, you want to bend the rules. Well, now you can set up your WHM/Cpanel server with a central php.ni and yet allow selected users the ability to use a customised php.ini, managed and controlled by YOU!

Just a quick update to my flying diary. Today was the culminative ground school, and practical examination for my FRTOL (Flight Radio Telephony Operators License – aviators love acronyms!). Last week I managed to pass the written test, which wasn’t too bad – just a multiple choice paper. This week it was somewhat more stressful.

Having now completed just a little over 8hrs as PUT (Pilot Under Tuition), I’m starting to take more notice of the weather than even your average Englishman. I recently started flying circuits, and it was apparent that some further study was required on my understanding of the weather. Meteorology is a huge topic, so today I’m just looking at one of the tools we can use to determine the winds we are likely to encounter en-route.

No – it’s not yet April 1st… I have done a bit of work on and off over the years with a local paranormal research unit. This has provided me with the opportunity to see and analyse several paranormal recordings, and even witness a couple of odd goings on myself – some of which I still can’t explain. However, I had to smile when I saw this one.

One of the things to consider when designing a logo is how it is likely to be reproduced, as this can have a huge impact on cost further down the road. This article deals with why we advise customers in a particular direction when designing identities.
